SV University reduces 120 merit seats in Engineering

SVUThe decision of Sri Venkateswara University College of Engineering (SVUCE) to reduce its merit seats from 360 to 240 has come as a bolt from the blue for the Eamcet aspirants. The college came under a cloud on the first day of Eamcet counselling, when students’ unions raised a banner of revolt against the decision to bring down the counselling seats by 120.

The institution offered 40 seats each for Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Electrical and Electronics (EEE), Electronics and Communication (ECE), Civil and Chemical and 60 seats for the Mechanical streams.

After the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) gave nod last year to the government colleges to raise the seats in each branch, the number of seats rose from 260 to 360. However, no provisions were made to increase the faculty members, classrooms and laboratory facilities commensurating the number of students. Parents feel that the move will hamper the prospects of 120 meritorious students. “While private colleges are admitting up to 180 students, why should a university college is surrendering the seats?,” asks G. Suresh Babu, father of a Eamcet candidate, saying that his son is unlikely to get a seat.

“Our classrooms can hold only 40 students. The faculty and labs are also inadequate . Hence, we decided to revert to the earlier number of seats. This is done only to retain the quality of education offered by the college,” SVUCE Vice-Chancellor W. Rajendra told .
