In one of the biggest ‘Give It Up’ campaigns, over a million Indians have given up their LPG subsidy in just three months. According to the government, over 20,000 people are giving up their subsidy daily, and the estimated money saved by government is Rs 140 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been urging citizens who can to give up their subsidy. However, from highly subsidised food for MPs in Parliament canteen to subsidised LPG for the privileged people, the rich and well-to-do are still enjoying the benefits of subsidies.
There are as many as 14.54 crore active LPG consumers in India, of which at least one crore consumers are eligible to surrender their subsidy. As on July 22, around 12.6 lakh Indians have given up their subsidy.
This has come months after the Prime Minister urged people to give up their LPG subsidy, saying, “I urge government officers and professionals of the country to give up their LPG subscription. It will help many mothers and households of our country.”
Terming it as an innovative way of governance, MoS Dharmendra Pradhan said, “Middle class people are joining in. Rich people should give up for the poor man of the country, this would be a great cause for national building.”
Meanwhile, NCP leader Praful Patel said that the need was for everyone to be “together on the issue”, adding that he has already given the subsidy availed by him.
