The number of air passengers from Andhra Pradesh has witnessed a growth of around 52 per cent as against about 18 per cent in the country.
The AP government released a report on the progress of various departments for the first five months of the current financial year at 2-day District Collectors Conference, chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
As per the report, the total passengers that travelled from 5 existing airports — Tirupati, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Kadapa — stood at 10,40,320 as against 6,83,861 for the same period of the last financial year.
Among these airports, the number of passengers at Vijayawada airport rose by 101 per cent with the announcement of the city as the state capital.
In this period, total passengers travelling from Vijayawada were 1,57,300 as against 78,079 in the
corresponding period.
A total of 6,63,590 passengers travelled from Visakhapatnam airport, which was 45.6 per cent more as compared to the corresponding period.
As per the report, the state government proposes to construct 5 more airports at Orvakallu, Kuppam, Dagadarthi, Nagarjunasagar and Donakonda.
It has also proposed to construct an international airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district.
The report further stated that expansion works at Vijayawada, Rajahmundry and Tirupati airports are under progress.
