Osmania University students are up in arms against Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s decision to allocate 11 acre of the unused university land to construct houses for the poor. Students, who played an important role during Telangana agitation, have criticized the move for acquiring university land for constructing houses, rather than expanding the historical university for educational purposes or making hostels for the students.
Krishank, a student leader, said, “He is challenging the same students who backed him. We will fight and not allow government to acquire university land for residential purpose.”
The opposition parties have also slammed the TRS government, accusing them of playing petty politics by acquiring university lands in the name of poor people. The Congress has criticized the government saying that instead of removing encroachment from the Osmania University’s premises, the TRS government itself is trying to snatch away the land.
Congress leader Shravan said, “The Chief Minister just want to take political mileage. If really wants to help poor, we should take away land from land grabbers and capitalists.”
The Chief Minister has grand plans to build two bedroom houses for thousands poor in Hyderabad. The government is defending its decision stating compounding residential problems in the state.
Deputy Chief Minister Mohammad Mehmood Ali said, “The opposition will always protest any decision. Earlier also there were many encroachments in university land. It is better the government only acquire.
The historical Osmania University had about 2200 acres of land during its inception but now its about 1400 acres only. Over the years, successive government have failed to protect the university land from various encroachments.
